Durham City 4s beat Richmond 3s 4-3
By Simon Campbell
4s x 4 needed to avoid slip-up
When I joked last week that we were heading for Europe it wasn't an invitation for half the team to go on holiday with a match in progress! Having lent their keeper a helmet we then increased our generosity by presenting their forwards with three soft goals. A delayed start and drenched pitch at MC provided the context for a near suicidal first quarter in which Richmond scored three goals without reply. If Boycott was watching he'd have called it "buffet-defending"; help yourself!
Having woken from our slumbers we then contrived to win a couple of short corners and make some progress on the wings. Jim Napier latched onto a Cuthbert cross for a sharp first and then found space in the circle to receive the ball with his back to goal, slip the defender and finish in style; 2-3. Richmond became unsettled and gaps began to appear with Charlie and Dylan pressing on the left. One such attack led to Jason finishing with a firm shot to the keeper's left. 3 all at half time and we were back in it.
The second half was end to end stuff with plenty of chances to both teams. Probably the move of the match by us led to the winner as a good simple passing move through midfield eventually found Jim unmarked in front of goal to finish for his hattrick. Durham tried hard to throw it away with some suicidal defending and careless clearances and apologetic tackling. We also had chances to put the game safe including a penalty spot shot dragged wide by Jason.
Right at the death Richmond found the net with a lifted shot from a short corner but Liam Farrar, on debut as umpire, righly ruled it out; poacher turned game keeper?
Credit to all those playing out of position, especially James who provided some much needed steel (!!) in defence. Johnny also had a good game with several second half saves from their veteran striker.
Steve Hargreaves now OK after taking a blow to the face.
Well done all!
