Fighting second half secures away point; 2-2.

Durham equalise with final play of the match.
Facing a Sunderland Broom team swelled by students, we were quickly on the back foot in this game and had to work desperately for any scraps of possession as the first half progressed. A dominant Sunderland midfield kept the ball and created several attacking moves leading to penalty corners. Johnny made a couple of solid saves and the defence toiled until the inevitable breakthrough via a well-struck shot beating the post-man. 1-0 at half time, although some good hold-up play by Jason and running off the ball by Michael and Dylan had given glimpses of attacking potential.
Durham started the second half with more conviction holding the ball more confidently and should have had a penalty corner only to see Sunderland break quickly through our veteran defence and score for a 2-0 lead which looked hard to retrieve. However some real spirit then emerged with James and Bruno fighting for 50-50 balls and feeding Michael and Dylan for a series of penetrating moves. 2 penalty corners saw shots narrowly wide by Jason before persistent combination play by Michael and Dylan produced a well-worked goal, aided by a good advantage from the away umpire. Nice finish Michael!
Slightly rattled by Durham's refusal to lie down, the home team started to give the ball away and positive defending by our back four provided a platform from which further attacks pressed forward. With 5 minutes to play Sunderland started to play possession again and it looked as though the points were gone but a final effort down the left brought a penalty corner as time was blown.
With one final opportunity we resorted to the standrad 4th team set play. Jason returned the ball to Simon who "swept" home from close range leaving "the Broom" gutted.
A really good point gained through big team effort in the second half. Well played all!
